This blog whole heartedly endorses writing your own shit, open sourcing it as your own years before using it in a work context, and then safely saving yourself the trouble of writing it again at work.
You get a lot of things from that:
1. You're protecting your ability to build off your own work, regardless of who is paying you.
2. You're learning how to use your work in a business context. And while they may be able to claim the derivative works, they can't claim the experience of making them, or your reimplementing them back into the open source (with learned experience they paid for (without looking at the derivative code))
3. You protect your portfolio. This is probably the most important: here's this thing I made, here are the business critical things it runs or supports.
Me, I made a silly curl wrapper to send and receive json from the RuneScape auction house API, now it's running in two ERP/E-commerce integrations about to be deployed company wide as our standard for API integrations. It's also running at least one Instagram integration for a ski resort and some event ticketing thing for a local theater. It's also been used for proof of concept demonstrations of security vulnerabilities.
Clients love it when you show them the picture of a kitten that has a PHP shell in it and then proceed to read them their email through the kitten shell. By love I mean no one actually liked that and I deployed the fix server wide anyway because we were hemorrhaging money on preventable security breaches.

USEFUL TIPS FOR ANYONE USING NEOCITIES
So, I saw this super awesome post called BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BLUESKY and it more or less inspired me to make a post of my own pertaining to the the likes of Neocities.
What is Neocities?
Long story short, it is an open-source web hosting service that is both F2U (1 GB storage/200 GB bandwidth) and P2U (50 GB storage/3000 GB bandwidth). It's kinda sorta a spiritual successor to the now defunct GeoCities.
Why Use Neocities?
HELPFUL LINKS
Neocities has a full on Tutorials Page to help people wanting to learning how to code. Though I will say that I'm a bit surprised they don't have W3 Schools on there.
CREATIVE FREEDOM
If you Browse on Neocities, you will see how vastly different all of the websites look. That being said, you have an enormous amount of creative freedom when it comes to making your website. You can build it from scratch or look up some pre-made templates from websites such as templatemo, HTML5 Templates, TEMPLATED, template4all, and many more.
Now it is important to note that Neocities doesn't allow certain things such as jQuery, PHP, Python, SQL, etc. In fact, the only things allowed on Neocities are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript! Though I do think it is important to note that you can turn your website into a blog using Zonelets, have a Guestbook/Comments Section with Guestbooks, embed your Bluesky feed with Embed Bsky, embed your Twitter/X feed with Twitter Publish, and much more!
What Do People Use Neocities For?
Some people use it for blogging & portfolio & educational purposes. Some people use it to share their writings & artwork & music. Some people use it to help people with finding neat things. Some people use it for shits and giggles. There are legitimately a number of reasons people use it and you know what? That's 100% a-okay!
Are Any Programs Required To Use Neocities?
Technically, no. The reason I say this is because Neocities has a built-in HTML Editor. However, I don't like using it unless if I absolutely have to (which is next to never). Instead, I use Brackets. It's very user-friendly and it legit lets you know if there's a goof somewhere in your code. Legit 10 out of 10 recommend. Though I will say that some people use Notepad++.

The Evolution of PHP: Shaping the Web Development Landscape
In the dynamic world of web development, PHP has emerged as a true cornerstone, shaping the digital landscape over the years. As an open-source, server-side scripting language, PHP has played a pivotal role in enabling developers to create interactive and dynamic websites. Let's take a journey through time to explore how PHP has left an indelible mark on web development.
1. The Birth of PHP (1994)
PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) came into being in 1994, thanks to Rasmus Lerdorf. Initially, it was a simple set of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) binaries used for tracking visits to his online resume. However, Lerdorf soon recognized its potential for web development, and PHP evolved into a full-fledged scripting language.
2. PHP's Role in the Dynamic Web (Late '90s to Early 2000s)
In the late '90s and early 2000s, PHP began to gain prominence due to its ability to generate dynamic web content. Unlike static HTML, PHP allowed developers to create web pages that could interact with databases, process forms, and provide personalized content to users. This shift towards dynamic websites revolutionized the web development landscape.
3. The Rise of PHP Frameworks (2000s)
As PHP continued to grow in popularity, developers sought ways to streamline and standardize their development processes. This led to the emergence of PHP frameworks like Laravel, Symfony, and CodeIgniter. These frameworks provided structured, reusable code and a wide range of pre-built functionalities, significantly accelerating the development of web applications.
4. PHP and Content Management Systems (CMS) (Early 2000s)
Content Management Systems, such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, rely heavily on PHP. These systems allow users to create and manage websites with ease. PHP's flexibility and extensibility make it the backbone of numerous plugins, themes, and customization options for CMS platforms.
5. E-Commerce and PHP (2000s to Present)
PHP has played a pivotal role in the growth of e-commerce. Platforms like Magento, WooCommerce (built on top of WordPress), and OpenCart are powered by PHP. These platforms provide robust solutions for online retailers, allowing them to create and manage online stores efficiently.
6. PHP's Contribution to Server-Side Scripting (Throughout)
PHP is renowned for its server-side scripting capabilities. It allows web servers to process requests and deliver dynamic content to users' browsers. This server-side scripting is essential for applications that require user authentication, data processing, and real-time interactions.
7. PHP's Ongoing Evolution (Throughout)
PHP has not rested on its laurels. It continues to evolve with each new version, introducing enhanced features, better performance, and improved security. PHP 7, for instance, brought significant speed improvements and reduced memory consumption, making it more efficient and appealing to developers.
8. PHP in the Modern Web (Present)
Today, PHP remains a key player in the web development landscape. It is the foundation of countless websites, applications, and systems. From popular social media platforms to e-commerce giants, PHP continues to power a significant portion of the internet.
9. The PHP Community (Throughout)
One of PHP's strengths is its vibrant and active community. Developers worldwide contribute to its growth by creating libraries, extensions, and documentation. The PHP community fosters knowledge sharing, making it easier for developers to learn and improve their skills.
10. The Future of PHP (Ongoing)
As web technologies continue to evolve, PHP adapts to meet new challenges. Its role in serverless computing, microservices architecture, and cloud-native applications is steadily increasing. The future holds exciting possibilities for PHP in the ever-evolving web development landscape.
In conclusion, PHP's historical journey is interwoven with the evolution of web development itself. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a web development powerhouse, PHP has not only shaped but also continues to influence the internet as we know it. Its versatility, community support, and ongoing evolution ensure that PHP will remain a vital force in web development for years to come.

Giving Tuesday – Sponsoring on GitHub… Debian, Ubuntu, PHP packaging … #GivingTuesday 💻📦
If you're on GitHub and see that your favorite open-source code, tools, or packages have a sponsorship for the developer, please consider doing it today.
We (Adafruit) sponsored oerdnj on GitHub, and we get a massive benefit from Ondřej Surý, who maintains Debian and Ubuntu packages that allow installing multiple versions of PHP. This includes backporting security updates to PHP7.4 and PHP8.0, which are no longer officially supported by the PHP.net folks.
OR! Check out Ondřej Surý's Patreon -

Join a worldwide celebration of generosity – GivingTuesday is an opportunity for people worldwide to come together through generosity in all its forms by sharing acts of kindness and giving their voice, time, money, goods, and advocacy to support communities and causes. More about Giving Tuesday on their site – https://www.givingtuesday.org/
The posts on Adafruit and its social media are resources, groups, causes, organizations, and more from the Adafruit team and community.
Since we’re in the techy and maker circles, we’ll spotlight many charities and open-source efforts.
The posts are not sponsored in any way. Adafruit provides paid time off for charity for all team members all year. We also want to thank the Adafruit team for the biggest gift one can give: their time. Many posts are about the charities, groups, and organizations in which the Adafruit team participates.
This year, we are getting the word out about ones we have not covered before, so don’t worry if you don’t see a previous one here!
